The Highway Rat is the latest Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler book to be brought to life in a fantastic trail in Gisburn Forest. Follow the panels, complete activities and interact with the forest as you head on a journey with The Highway Rat and all the characters from the story!

Before you start your journey on the trail you can get an activity pack from the Gisburn Forest Hub Cafe. The Highway Rat Activity Pack contains an activity leaflet plus an extra activity sheet, a Highway Rat mask, stickers of the Highway Rat characters, string, a pencil and a crayon. All of which help make your journey along the trail even more enjoyable.

The trail is aimed at younger children, but everyone can get involved with the activities along the way. There are opportunities to spot characters throughout the trail and this is a great way to spend time in the great outdoors. The walk is a mile in length and so is perfect for little legs. The pathway is quite uneven and is not fully suitable for a pram. We took one and struggled in places with it.

At the Hub Cafe, there is a wide range of amazing food for everyone to enjoy. You can even hire bikes from here if you want to explore the area in more depth. Numbers, however, are limited and so it is worth booking in advance. Discounts are available online. Car parking is plentiful here and there is a 3 fixed cost for the day. Make sure you bring change!

If you fancy staying in the area for longer we can highly recommend a short stay at Peaks and Pods. They are situated nearby and offer a luxurious and relaxing stay!
