Terrified of public toilets

Hi all, I've recently potty trained my toddler but he's terrified of toilets, particularly public ones. I think it stems from being a baby and the hand drier machines scaring him. I've tried going into individual toilets, asking him to come in with me when I go. He prefers to wee up a wall or a tree when we're out which I used to turn my nose up at. How can I encourage him to use toilets and not be afraid?
