Ponderosa Centre

by Lydia (follow)
Animals and adventure

The Ponderosa Centre in Heckmondwike was established and set up to bridge the gap between disabled and able bodied people. They enable disabled volunteers to work alongside their friendly staff to care for a wide range of animals at the zoo. With a wide range of attractions and activities, they are so much more than just a zoo.

From the endangered lemurs of Madagascar to the rare Scottish Wildcat there are animals here to engage adults and children alike. Don't miss out on the keeper talks and feeding times as you will get to learn all about the different kinds of animals living here. Our favourites are the meerkats, but, if reptiles are more your thing, there is a house full of them to examine.

They offer animal handling opportunities here, which include rabbits, guinea pigs and reptiles The pony petting is also very popular. These are a great 'hands-on' experience for all children.

There are lots of different areas at the centre for children to blow off steam. They have recently opened a new adventure playground, where children can climb, jump, swing and slide to their hearts content. The zipwire is great fun too. There are lots of picnic benches nearby, so you won't miss out on the action.

If you have any pirate fans they will not be disappointed as they have a large beach area complete with a wooden pirate ship. This is the perfect place for adventures. If the weather isn't on your side, there is also an indoor play area which has a small additional cost to play inside. Children under 2 pay 1.50 and children between the ages of 3 and 8 pay 3.50 for an hours fun. The play barn is open 10:00 am until 4:00 pm daily.
