All aboard for a great day out

Middleton Railway is the world's oldest working railway situated in South Leeds. It is operated entirely by volunteers who seek to provide a great value, all weather attraction for families with children of all ages.

They offer a range of train rides at weekends, bank holidays and selected Wednesdays during school holidays. The train rides are a highlight of any trip here and they go from Moor Road to Park Halt and back again. The round trip lasts for 25 minutes and so is a perfect time for little ones who can't sit still for long!

For those wanting to spend time at Middleton Park you can get off the train at Park Holt and return to Moor Road at a later time. Return tickets are normally valid all day. The park itself covers 630 acres of ancient woodland, open grassland and recreational areas so is a great spot for adventures. They also have a boating lake and visitor centre within the park and easy access walking trails for you to explore.

The museum is free for all visitors and here they have a fantastic collection of locomotives and rolling stock. One of the popular exhibits is the two steam locomotives which are arranged with steps up to them, and a walkway alongside them, so that you can visit their cabs. Children (and adults as well!) really can pretend to be an engine driver here. Then, further along the display hall, there are some fine models on display, as well as real locomotives - both diesel and steam.

There are a range of special events held at the railway and one of which is the Santa Special which is a fabulous way to spend the festive period. Children will see Santa and his elves board the train and will meet him on board, where they will receive a specially selected present. The station will be beautifully decorated and Christmas trees will adorn the display hall, so the magic starts as soon as they arrive.

You can also hire the party coach out for children's birthdays and this is incredibly good value for money. The coach is specially decorated for exclusive use and the children can spend time at Middleton Park as part of their party. You can bring your own food or alternatively they do have catering facilities available also. This costs 65 for 20 people or 95 for 30 people. For more information about parties see here.
