A taste of the country

[Link http://www.mvuf.org.uk/ Meanwood Valley Urban Farm] is a charity that was established in 1980 that seeks to provide a 'taste of the country' within the city boundaries. It provides educational services to disadvantaged young people and adults and offers environmental education to primary school children. It’s not only a working farm on a 24 acre site, but, also a major centre for community and environmental work.

is home to a wide variety of farm animals, amenity and market gardens and a range of natural habitats. Some of the animals can be seen from close quarters but the varied wildlife is a little more elusive. Animals here include; bees, alpacas, chickens, cows, donkeys, ducks, goats, guinea pigs, rabbits and sheep.

Admission for adults is £2 and for children it is 50p, so a visit here is well worth it. There is a small play area for under 12s as well for children to explore and investigate. Don't forget to check out the independently-run Barn Coffee Shop which is also located on the Farm.

They host a really popular 'Summer Playscheme' here which is run over 15 days in July and August and is for 8 to 12-year-olds. It has been running for over twenty years and is open to children across the city, with discounted places being offered as a priority to children from the local inner city LS7, thanks to support from Leeds City Council and Leeds Play Network. The Playscheme is run by experienced professionals and also enables 15 to 18-year-old ‘helpers’ from deprived areas of Leeds to volunteer alongside, giving them valuable experience and developing their motivation, self-esteem and teamwork.

In addition to the animals, there are several woodland walks including a longer walk into the Scott Hall Copse at the far end of the Farm. You can really make a full day out by exploring the beautiful countryside nearby.
