The perfect family day out
[Link https://boltonabbey.com/ Bolton Abbey] is nestled in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales on the banks of the River Wharfe. It has been hailed as one of Yorkshire's best days out. It boasts 30,000 acres of beautiful countryside and over 80 miles of footpaths to walk and explore, providing something for all ages.

At the heart of Estate lies the Priory Church and Ruins of an Augustinian Priory in its beautiful riverside setting. It is set within a landscape full of history and legend and there is so much to do here for families.

The stepping stones here are a key feature of and they were used as the crossing point for the lay workers at the Priory. The 60 stepping stones offer a fun and challenging experience for today’s visitor. For those who do not wish to cross via the stepping stones there is a bridge offering a safe and dry passage. North of the stepping stones is a large beach area popular with visiting families. This is the perfect spot to enjoy a picnic, build sandcastles have a little paddle in the river or simply relax and take in the view of the Priory.

Strid Wood is the perfect setting for a woodland walk. It is one of the largest remnants of sessile oak trees in the Yorkshire Dales and it is home to a myriad of wildlife including roe deer, otters, kingfisher and greater spotted woodpecker. There are a series of colour coded nature trails for you to explore and the green trail from the Cavendish Pavilion to the Strid on the west bank of river is pushchair and wheelchair friendly.

They have an ever changing events programme at the Abbey which provides fabulous activities for children to enjoy. One of these is the Welly Walk which is a woodland adventure trail that promises lots of fun and mud! The trail leads you from the stepping stones to the Cavendish Pavilion and you can look forward to navigating balance beams, wobbly stirrups, tunnels, scramble nets, the maze and many more obstacles. Other seasonal events include a pumpkin trail, bonfire night fireworks, Christmas workshops and Father Christmas themed activities.
